Insights from real life wabisabi

So, I did have an attempt at a plan for all of my writing for this week, and one thing that this week has taught me so far is that my plan was pretty poorly made. The details aren’t important enough, but today was complicated enough that I neither made any kintsugi nor have any significant thoughts about my planned writing for today. So, while I do consider this a bit unfortunate in that it is inconvenient and annoying, it actually is quite convenient in that is showed me the flaws in my planning strategy.

On a day like today where, basically, the weather was a problem, I need a strategy for dealing with that. Weather will certainly cause similar problems again and again for as long as I live, so I need an actual method to deal with these problems. My method so far has always been to put things off. And, most of the time, that works reasonably well. But, starting at the beginning of this week, I decided to write and publish at least one blog post every day. If you’re familiar with Seth Godin, that’s where I got this idea. If you’re not familiar with him, I recommend reading him. He’s been making a daily blog post for something like 7,000 days. I will let you, oh, dear reader, do the math on that. It surprised me too. But, one of the best reasons to study weird nerds is to find out ways to do things that you didn’t realize were really possible. And I think that is a pretty good example of something that I, and basically anyone I know, if asked, would have said was at least essentially impossible. But if he did it, so can anyone else.

While I don’t have incredibly insightful sounding thoughts on wabisabi or kintsugi at the moment, this is still a pretty good example. I’m not currently able to write about what I had planned to write about because the storm is too loud and has been for a few hours, and it would take several more hours for the tinnitus to turn back down if it stopped right now, but I can write about the problems I have with writing and the realization that I need an actual strategy to deal with them.

One possible strategy to deal with similar situations is to write more things in advance, so I just have to post them. Since this is my first week trying daily public writing, I don’t feel too bad for not having a clear strategy for days where life interferes with my goals yet, but if I can plan ahead a little better, then life will be less able to interfere with these goals. And while my method for dealing with that problem today is pretty far from perfect, and I’m not really willing to argue that it is beautiful, I think there is some strength to be gained from these thoughts.

Whenever you have the type of day that it just interferes with your goals, remember that you are being shown that your methodology for planning and executing those goals has some weaknesses. Strengthen those weaknesses and see how that improves things.
